Eagle Rock, Applecross, Scottish Highlands

The most wonderful and luxurious retreat in the Highlands

Nestled between earth and sky, Eagle Rock is the ideal perch to take some time out, reconnect with what is most important to you, and allow the song of the wild highlands to wrap you in wonder. In stormy weather, curl up in the snug by the fire with a good book or movie from the well- stocked library. Watch the drama in the sky from a cosy window seat or prepare a feast in the dream kitchen. Nestled on this cliff, in its own birch-shielded haven, the hot tub perches over the Inner Sound, which is the minch between the mainland and the isles of Raasay and Skye. The tub is kept in pristine condition, at a constant 39ºC (102ºF) and is a perfect place to soak in the surrounding splendour – morning, noon or night! The hot tub is surrounded by seating, a drinks counter, and non-slip decking, with a tap for washing off. There is a ‘Hot Tub Kit’ inside, with stylish metal glasses and flutes, and lighting devices. (When the stars or Northern Lights are doing their thing, it’s great to be able to completely black out the site).

About Applecross

Applecross is remote, situated on the Applecross Peninsula on the West Coast of Scotland, opposite the Isle of Skye and straight across on the map from Inverness on the East Coast. With its surprisingly wide variety of attractions for such a remote wee place, attracts people from every walk of life, from all over the globe.

We have a volunteer-run 24 hour petrol pump, a hydro power scheme, our own broadband called Applenet, a community car scheme and village bus, a vibrant village hall and music scene and a shared gratitude for the beauty and culture of this extraordinary sanctuary

The guests at Eagle Rock have in common a curiosity, a sense of romance and adventure… and hopefully, decent brakes for coming over what locals call ‘ehe hill’

The scenic beauty of sea and mountains combined is arguably unmatched anywhere in Scotland. The views across the Inner Sound, where the water is influenced by the Gulf Stream, are spectacular – the rugged profile of the Cuillins of Skye, Raasay, Rona and the islands of the Outer Hebrides providing a magnificent panorama.

The north coast of the peninsula gives views over Loch Torridon, where many scenes from the film ‘Loch Ness‘ were filmed, towards the Torridon mountains.

There are many scenic routes in the Highlands but this one beats them all. National Geographic named the Bealach na Ba one of the 50 Best Drives in the World. The Bealach na Ba (‘Pass of the Cattle’) is the highest road in Scotland and is often closed during the winter snows. It climbs relentlessly and dramatically through a series of tortuous switchbacks – both spectacular and terrifying in equal measure. The high plateau, at 2,053 ft, is cold and desolate, but from here you have the most stunning views: from Ardnamurchan Peninsula to Loch Torridon, taking in Eigg, Rùm, the Cuillins of Skye, the Old Man of Storr and the Quirang.

Getting to us:

The closest airport is Inverness, 80 miles away. Many guests choose to land in Glasgow and take Route 2 because it is such a spectacular drive.

Easyjet and Flybe are the main UK based airlines coming into Inverness with many direct flights from Gatwick and Luton near London, Healthrow, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff and more.

Inverness to Applecross via the Applecross Pass (Bealach na Ba) It is definitely quicker to go via Inverness (north on the M90 towards Perth, then the A9 to Inverness and across to Lochcarron. Drive through Lochcarron and Kishorn, a mile or so through Kishorn, turn left on the un-numbered road sign posted to Applecross and go over the  into Applecross. Turn left at the T-Junction in Applecross pass the Applecross Inn on your left, through Milton, pass a small loch on your left and take the right hand fork at the Town Hall (which is on your left). The first driveway on your right (40 yards from the fork) leads to Eagle Rock. Please check weather conditions close to your time of travel; you may need to take the coast road.

The Torridon Peninsula Coast Road, via Shieldaig. This route adds about 30 minutes to the overall journey time, but the views across the Inner Sound – (part of the Gulf Stream) – are spectacular (and bad weather might force closure of the Bealach).  Enjoy the panorama of the Cuillins of Skye, Raasay, Rona and the islands of the Outer Hebrides, and to the north, views over Loch Torridon and the magnificent Torridon mountains

Having taken the route above, you would pass the turn off to Applecross through Lochcarron, just beyond Kishorn and continue directly north on the A896 then turn left onto the coast road to Applecross, just short of Shieldaig, but on this route, you’d take the A832 just past Achnasheen to Kinlochewe, then turn left onto the A896 going South, just beyond Shieldaig, turn right onto the coast road to Applecross. A much less hair-raising road to take!
