Heath Cottage was built circa 1900 and it is a fine example of a truly lovely Norfolk cottage, complete with original Norfolk winder staircase. It has been extended tastefully over a number of years into the light, spacious and beautiful cottage that it is today. This full of character cottage is situated at the edge of a charming village with two very dog friendly pubs and lots of walks from the door, including direct access to Weavers Way. Sea Palling, with its Blue Flag beach, is just a short 5 minutes by car and Horsey beach, famous for its seals, is a short 12 minutes drive away.
Blue circles show available start date – Friday.
Grey blocks show already booked periods.
Short breaks welcome in low season, Friday to Monday and Monday to Friday
As you arrive, you will see a large gravelled parking area behind a gate, with room for three cars to park. The access door to the cottage is to the right hand side of the cottage, through the small picket gate..
Enter the cottage to the vestibule. This is the perfect room to pop your outdoor clothes and shoes and also contains a handy wall rack for all your dogs accoutrements! There is also a storage unit with doggie supplies- bowls, towels, shampoo, poo bags, toys etc and gives you wonderful views across the fields, towards the local stables.
The field you can see from the vestibule is owned by Heath Cottage owners. Their field is used (free of charge) by the local Hickling animal charity FAITH and they have some very happy horses that make great use of the field.
The door on the other side of the vestibule gives access to the back garden via a stable door (which is ultra secure for your dogs).
Kitchen – This is a beautifully fitted kitchen, with every kitchen appliance and tool you could think of, or need……Truly something for everyone!
Our lovely owners have taken great care to ensure that your holiday is carried out in style and comfort. For the chefs among us, there is no excuse not to cook up a storm with the wonderful copper based hanging pans in easy reach. There are lovely views from double aspect windows, and you can enjoy this at the table for two.
Utility Area – Where you will find a washer dryer and ironing equipment.
Bathroom – Relax in comfort in this nautical themed bathroom with white sink, toilet and bath with over-the-bath shower.
Snug / Downstairs Bedroom – Come back through the kitchen and take the first door on your right to the snug. This room has patio doors which open out into the secure back garden and has a lovely area with seating outside – just perfect for that morning coffee and soaking up the rays! This room is furnished with a lovely single bed
Dining Room – With lovely views to the side garden, a lovely dining table and chairs, cosy multi-fuel stove and beautiful dresser with ornamental plates and ornaments.
Living Room – A fabulous room to relax in with plenty of seating, original internal doors (which are throughout the cottage), feature ornamental open fire and beautiful lamps. A 40 inch screen Smart TV, which has a Bluray DVD and also Sky TV.
Conservatory – This stunning room has gorgeous views of the enclosed rear garden and has very comfy corner suite with a table and feature lighting.
Head back through to the dining room then up the ‘Norfolk winder’ stairs. These stairs ‘wind’ round, so if your feet are a little larger, be careful on the slimmer steps. Do have a little caution as Norfolk stairs can be steep.
Bedroom 1 – Light and airy room with comfortable double bed, side table, lamp, drawers and wardrobe. (Hairdryer also supplied.)
Bedroom 2 – Another light and airy room (with double aspect) with twin beds, side units, lamps, wardrobe and dresser. It has a beautiful ornamental original feature fireplace. (Hairdryer also supplied.)
The cottage has been thoughtfully restored and decorated in keeping with the style of the cottage.
Garden – The rear garden can be accessed via the vestibule stable door, conservatory door or the downstairs bedroom.
It has been dog proofed to a very high degree with all surrounding border bushes post and wired and picket fence to side and rear of the garden. The garden is laid mainly to grass with camelia bushes, apple and pear trees and many lovely features.
A restored dovecot can also be found in the garden.
Seating for 4 on the outside patio which is a real suntrap.
Nature enthusiasts will delight in exploring Norfolk Wildlife Trust Hickling Broad, just a brief two-mile journey from the village. I can’t think of anywhere more welcoming, relaxing and delightful for a wonderful break away with your dogs.
Heath Cottage is situated in a very quiet part of Hickling (a rural Broadlands village). There is a field on one side and whilst there is a neighbour on the other side of this detached cottage, it cannot be seen either from the house or garden, and the garden is very secure. There are some lovely quiet walks nearby including Weavers Way (a 5 min walk from the cottage) and some nice bridle paths out of the village.
For those seeking a blend of relaxation and adventure, nearby towns such as Cromer and Sheringham beckon with seaside charm, while quaint villages like Happisburgh and Horsey offer tranquil escapes and botanical wonders like East Ruston’s renowned Vicarage Gardens.

Heath Cottage is a truly fabulous place! Comfortable, cozy and absolutely everything you need for humans and furbabies. Felt very much at home and relaxed from the minute we arrived! The dogs had a wonderful time in the garden and we didn’t really need to visit loads of places as the Hickling Broads were just a short walk away. We met the lovely locals along the way who gave treats to the dogs and fascinating conversation for myself and the Husband. Bonfire weekend did not affect the dogs even though there were a few let off – could not really hear anything inside the cottage! We didn’t want to come home!!! Hopefully will be back very soon.
Had a lovely week in the cottage with some lovely walks with the dogs and some of the family enjoyed a boat cruise. Wonderful garden and great seeing muntjacs in the field beside the cottage. Boys adored the garden! Loved washing up and listening to the bird song! Thank you for a fabulous week! The cottage is so beautiful and homely
Without a doubt the best cottage in Norfolk for a holiday. Perfectly secure garden for the dogs. The dogs loved the beach at Waxham and when that was too hot, the shady walks in Bacton Woods. Humans enjoyed all the amazing wildlife, particularly at Hickling Nature Reserve. All in all a perfect Broadland holiday
