About the property

Awaiting your arrival will be tea, coffee, sugar, milk, a loaf of home-baked bread, delicious home bakes, a complimentary bottle of wine and some Scottish beer – perfect for unwinding after your journey.

Whether you are a fishing party or a family, walkers or writers, sightseers or cyclists – we want you to enjoy a wonderful stay at Tanar View in the heart of Royal Deeside. You’ll find up-to-date information about the area within the apartment, but we are always happy to help with personal advice on places to go and things to do.

We sleep 4 guests in a double bedroom and second room with adult-sized bunk beds. A travel cot available on request.

Outside

  • Expansive south-facing upper deck with breathtaking views of Glen Tanar – a prime spot for dining alfresco or wildlife watching. Regular visitors include red deer, roe deer, grouse, red squirrels, hares, badgers, and an array of birds. Lucky guests may even glimpse a Golden Eagle soaring above, or enjoy watching the Highland cows grazing in the fields below.

  • Lower deck with hot tub – offering unbeatable views and complete privacy.

  • Firepit for cosy evenings under the stars.

Parking directly outside on a small gravelled area with an onsite EV charger. There is also a garage space below the apartment with: 

  • Freezer and washing machine
  • Ample storage for bikes, skis, and outdoor gear
  • Rod rack
  • Rowing machine and two mountain bikes available for guest use
  • Tumble drier (on request)

  • Logs, kindling, and electricity (electric heaters throughout) included in the price.
  • Well-behaved dogs welcome by arrangement (£30 per dog) – crate available on request. Please note deer and livestock are nearby, so dogs must be kept under control.

Aboyne and Royal Deeside

Tanar View sits within the grounds of the restored Dalwhing Mill House, right on the doorstep of the Glen Tanar estate and the Cairngorms National Park. From here, you’re perfectly placed for fishing on the River Dee (just a two-minute drive from the Craigendinnie beat), cycling through Royal Deeside, or skiing, walking, and mountain biking in the Cairngorms.

We’re only two miles from the Glen Tanar Ballroom and close to Coo Cathedral, making us an ideal base if you’re attending a wedding in the area. We’re also just across the river from the Aboyne Gliding Club for those wanting a bird’s eye view of Deeside.

Reached via a 500-metre tree-lined forest track, Tanar View feels wonderfully peaceful and private, yet you’re only two miles from the village of Aboyne, with its pub, coffee shops, Indian restaurant, fish and chip shop, post office, community centre (theatre & pool), independent shops and a well-stocked Co-op.

Head the other way and you’ll reach the small village of Dinnet, home to a friendly hotel and restaurant serving home-cooked meals plus an intriguing antique shop. Ten minutes further west is Ballater, bursting with independent shops and eateries, and just a stone’s throw from Balmoral Castle – the summer residence of the Royal Family.

A little further afield:

  • Braemar – surrounded by spectacular scenery, with the Highland Games Centre, the iconic Fife Arms Hotel and its renowned art collection, plus excellent walking.

  • Banchory – half an hour east, a lively town with plenty of shops (including Orvis for fishing and shooting enthusiasts).

  • Aberdeen – an hour’s drive away, with big-city shopping, restaurants, museums, art galleries, and cinemas.
